How This Parent Page Can Help Safeguard Your Child
Here at Will Adams Academy, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, supported, and empowered—both in school and beyond. We believe safeguarding is a shared responsibility between school and home. This page is designed to support you in helping your child stay safe, informed, and confident during their teenage years.
Why Ages 14–16 Matter
Teenagers between 14 and 16 are developing independence, forming deeper relationships, and spending more time online and out in the community. These years are full of growth—but also come with challenges. That’s why safeguarding is more important than ever.
How We Safeguard at School
- Trained Safeguarding Team: Our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) are available to support students and respond to concerns.
- Monitoring Through CPOMS: We use CPOMS to track and respond to safeguarding issues, ensuring timely intervention and support.
- Education & Awareness: Through PSHE lessons and assemblies, students learn about online safety, healthy relationships, mental health, and consent.
- Pastoral Support: We offer safe spaces and trusted adults for students to talk to when they need help.
How You Can Help at Home
Tips for Starting Conversations
Talking to your teenager about safeguarding topics can feel daunting—but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some gentle ways to open up dialogue:
- Choose the right moment: Car journeys, walks, or quiet time at home can be great opportunities for relaxed conversation.
- Ask open-ended questions: Try “How was your day?” or “What’s something interesting that happened this week?” to get them talking.
- Be curious, not critical: If they mention something worrying, respond calmly and ask questions to understand more.
- Use media as a springboard: Discuss a TV show, news story, or social media post to introduce topics like online safety or peer pressure.
- Share your own experiences: Talking about your teenage years can help build trust and show empathy.
- Keep it regular: Short, frequent chats are often more effective than one-off serious talks.
