Dover Castle Trip - Coding and Cipher Workshop

Year 11 students enjoyed a memorable and enriching maths trip to Dover Castle, combining history, problem-solving and teamwork in a unique setting.

The first activity was the immersive tour of the Dark Dynamo Tunnels, where students braved the darkness while learning about the vital role the tunnels played during wartime. Along the way, they heard fascinating stories, including the remarkable tale of General Ramsey, who signed up to the army at just 15 years old.

The visit continued to the Dover Command Centre, where students took part in a “top secret” coding and cipher workshop. They worked enthusiastically to crack codes and solve problems, applying logical thinking and mathematical skills in a real-world historical context.

Dover staff commented on how well our students carried themselves and how much they enjoyed having them in the workshop. Overall, it was an excellent trip that showcased not only our students’ maths skills, but also their maturity, curiosity, and positive attitude.
